Bird Photography – Really Right Stuff’s Monopod Solution

Really Right Stuff Monopod SolutionI’ve been shooting with a Canon EF 300mm f/4L IS USM lens with a 1.4x extender mounted on Really Right Stuff’s MH-01 monopod head lately and found the combination to be very stable yet light-weight and portable. Something my full Gitzo Tripod / RRS Ball Head / Wimberley Sidekick rig is not (light-weight and portable that is).

This monopod solution is the same sort you’ll find professional sports photographers using to carry their really heavy (600mm – 800mm) lenses. Since I tend to walk around a lot looking for different birds and different environments to shoot in, this type of support rig makes perfect sense for me. Using this rig along with the lenses “image stabilization” technology allows me to capture birds swimming or in flight in fairly low light conditions.

Really Right Stuff MH-01 Monopod SolutionEvery piece of equipment I’ve bought from Really Right Stuff has performed flawlessly. Being an engineer by training, I can really appreciate the time and effort that goes into every little feature. The workmanship, fit and finish of all the parts is truly spectacular and these things are built to last. I can see myself using this monopod solution for years to come and I’m sure it will outlast me.
