Bird Photography – Not All Birds Are Beautiful

In nature, form follows function. This is most certainly true about the Turkey Vulture, a frequent visitor to the Brazos Bend State Park. There is little about a perched Turkey Vulture that is attractive. Their bare-skinned faces are downright ugly and a little frightening to look at.

Once these huge birds take flight it’s another story altogether. The Turkey Vulture is simply magnificent to watch as it soars over large areas searching for carrion. It’s five to six foot wing span allows this huge bird to soar for hours without flapping it’s wings.

There were literally hundreds of Turkey Vultures soaring above the Brazos Bend State Park last weekend and as you can see, getting a close-up shot was not really a problem.

    • Hey Mark,

It looks like Jersey Vultures are better looking than Texas Vultures. I lived in South Jersey for two years and never saw one. Are you sure these aren’t some of Joe’s friends from NYC?

      Jeff
