Wings Over Houston – Coast Guard Rescue HDR

Here’s another two images I’ve processed from last weekend’s shoot at the Wings Over Houston air show. The first is an HDR image of the Coast Guard’s Air Rescue chopper in the early morning sun and the second is the same chopper hovering over the runway. I’ve never converted an HDR image into grayscale before and the detail it brings out is incredible.

Shots taken with a Canon 40D hand-held, EF-S 17-85mm f/4-5.6 IS USM at 78mm, f/16 at ISO 100 on SanDisk digital film. The HDR file was made from three RAW images tone-mapped in Photomatix Pro. All other processing was done in Lightroom 2 and Noise Ninja. Click on the image above for a larger version.

  1. Gaye & Tom,

Thanks for the compliments. Converting an HDR image to grayscale really seems to bring out incredible detail. I stumbled upon this quite by accident but I definitely be using this technique more in the future.

  2. The sense of depth and three dimensional feeling is great in the black and white. Great great shot, awesome result. Loved it!
